When visiting the city of Cologne in Germany, make sure you have left all your dining inhibitions and diet restrictions at home because these would only lessen the enjoyment you would experience during your stay in this fine German city. Why you ask? Well because the City of Cologne can cook up some very delectable dishes and offer sumptuous treats that are all hard to say no to.

Cologne is well known for its extraordinary array of beers often served in beer gardens. However, you would also find a number of chewy and delicious dishes in this North Westephalian city in Germany that would make you want to dine out day in, day out.

One specialty which you should definitely try while in Cologne is called Flönz. We all know Germans love sausages and Flönz is a well-known sausage served in almost every major dining area in Cologne City. Flönz is actually a type of blood sausage, which although it sounds as if it is a delicacy for vampires and anemics is actually a very delicious and healthy dish. Unlike most blood sausages though, the Flönz in Cologne is served cooked, not smoked.

A meal popularly served in Cologne which also features blood sausages is called Himmel un Ääd which when translated means “Heaven and Earth”. Himmel un Ääd is comprised of mashed potatoes served with stewed or mashed apples, fried blood pudding or fried blood sausages, and sometimes also with bacon and onions. The complexity and diversity of tastes offered in this meal is very interesting and makes for one very hearty meal.

If you want a meat dish, then why not try the very traditional Rheinischer Soorbrode. This dish was often made using horse meat which has been marinated in vinegar, wine and a unique mixture of spices for several days so that the flavors are infused into the meat through and through. Nowadays though, many people opt to use beef instead of horse meat. This Cologne dining specialty can be served with mashed potatoes or stewed, mashed apples which is called by locals as “ Knödeln”.

For times when you want only a simple snack to fill you up, then try the Cologne dining specialty called Halver Hahn”. The literal translation of this term is “Half a cock” but the dish does not involve a cock, chicken or any other fowl for that matter. Halver Hahn is actually just a plain bread served with cheese and some mustard. For a sweeter snack or breakfast, you might also like the famous Cologne pancakes called Rievkoche which is make of potatoes and served with mashed apples.
